From planning to performance verification of high-containment facilities

Laboratory design an construction

The planning, design, construction and performance verification of high-containment facilities including laboratories for animal research (BSL-3, ABSL-3 and BSL-3Ag), require a well-thought-out approach to ensure that the end result meets the expectations of the owner or client as well as the users.

From a project risk perspective, it is crucial to choose the right approach when it comes to balancing the functionality, user-friendly operation, regulatory compliance, and costs of the facility within a reasonable planning and construction schedule. Models and tools are presented and utilised in the workshop for the planning and design of a functional BSL-3 laboratory or animal housing facility that meets both the requirements of users and operators and the applicable legal regulations and best practices. Selected facility-related trades, systems and equipment serve as examples to illustrate the process from planning and design through to performance verification.

Key topics

  • Planning and design phases, tailored to projects with complex requirements or stringent regulations (animal welfare, biosafety, biosecurity)
  • Suitable contract models and delivery methods
  • Application of legal requirements and best practices to a specific project
  • Verifiable and validatable specifications of user requirements in accordance with applicable legislation on biological safety and biosecurity or on the keeping of laboratory animals.
  • Qualification, verification and validation of key systems and components of the facility

  • Participants will acquire the ability to efficiently plan and implement high-security laboratories (BSL-3, ABSL-3, BSL-3Ag), taking into account functionality, user-friendliness, regulatory requirements and costs.
  • They will learn to apply practical models and tools to design laboratory infrastructures in a targeted manner, from the planning stage through to performance verification.
  • Participants will develop strategies to minimise project risks and strike a balance between user needs, compliance and economic constraints.

  • Biocontainment engineers and architects
  • Biocontainment managers
  • Biosafety professionals
